Twisting dragon
Dogs, cats, cows, lizards: yoga has long been associated with the animal world. The animal kingdom has, in fact, inspired so many of the simple poses that we now do every single day on our yoga mats. But dinosaurs and dragons? Now there’s another one to add to the list: the Twisting Dragon. This time the pose has been inspired by the hadrosaur, a kind of bulky, walking prehistoric lizard, in Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum. It’s a powerful yin-like pose, l ike Warrior, designed to g et the inner fir es burning – l ike a dr agon br eathing fir e, appar ently. The Toronto Star showed a picture of local yoga instructor, YuMee Chung, performing the pose right in front of the dinosaur skeleton. On this occasion, we’ve found something that’s even older than the ancient discipline of yoga itself.
Better backs
Yoga could be the key to preventing back pain, new research shows. Analysis of mor e than 1 ,000 men and women in the USA with longterm lower back pain found that patients who practiced yoga were most likely to reduce pain levels and improve their mobility. The patients involved in the studies analysed by lead author Dr Susan Wieland, from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, were enrolled on yoga classes specificall y designed f or their conditions and pr ovided by qual ified teachers. “Our findings sugg est that yoga exercise may lead to reducing the symptoms of lower back pain by a small amount, but the results have come from studies with a short f ollow-up,” said Wieland. “At the moment we onl y have low to moderate quality evidence for the effects of yoga before six months as a type of exercise for helping people with chronic back pain.”
