T he ancient Romans had a good saying: Mens sana in corpore sano (a healthy mind in a healthy body).
We have known for centuries that regular and sensible physical activity provides a health boost for all ages. And yoga, in particular, seems to strike the perfect balance between a rigorous exercise and a calm mind.
In yoga, we find asanas that can chall enge even the fittest of athletes. At the same time, many poses are accessible enough to welcome beginners into the practice. The body-mind connection is at the heart of any serious yoga practice. Yoga really is for everyone: from the martial arts expert to the elderly, from the competitive runner to the child.
Indeed, yoga for children is on the up. Many swear by its benefits for children as young as two; even babies are doing fun yoga with their mums. Many go as far as to say that a woman doing yoga and meditation while pregnant will share the positive impact of her practice with her yetto- be-born child.
The good news is mindfulness and yoga after school clubs are spreading quickly. In primary schools, the practice is mainly playful and car e-free (during Key Stag e 1) and then confidence-boosting (in Key Stage 2). In secondary schools, young yogis need more body awareness work and are often up for challenging asanas, positive affirmations and mudr as, in a relaxed and non-competitive atmosphere. Sharing your experiences in a friendly circle, often at the end of a long day at school, having fun while being present in your body and accepting it exactly how it is, is a life-affirming experience for many youngsters.
