Teacher’s Tales:
There is a well known phrase in yoga circles: “Blessed are the flexible for they shall not be bent out of shape.” This never really resonated with me. I’m more a “Blessed are the stiff…you’re probably less likely to get injured” kind of person.
By yoga teacher standards, I am not that bendy. In my early days of practicing yoga becoming as bendy as possible was one of my main goals. After all, if you practice yoga you are meant to be very flexible, aren’t you? That’s the perception and, to some degree, the expectation to the point of hyper-mobility often being celebrated as the ideal. (Yet, hyper-mobil ity brings its own concerns and requirements for a safe practice.) Yes, yoga can improve flexibility but how much flexibility do you need?
