I was travelling on the London Underground last week with my teenage daughter. It had been a long day and we were winding our way home, tired but happy to be together. People were bustling on and off the train, offering us similar visuals with each stop: gadgets in hand, earphones plugged in, heads down and disconnected.
And then the scenery changed as a father and young daughter climb aboard. It was clear that they made this journey a lot. They were comfortably dressed, and both looked relaxed in transit. They stepped into the carriage, each with a book in hand. The father took hold of an overhead strap for support, the other hand held his book. His daughter leaned into him, holding an open book in her hands. The train swayed, and so did they — dad holding on, child leaning in. He was steadfast; his legs planted firmly on the ground. At times he let go of the strap and rested his hand on the child’s shoulder.
