The hot room

Michele Pernetta, the creator of Fierce Grace, highlights the benefits of hot yoga and outlines some of the solid research behind it

I have been teaching hot yoga for nearly 20 years. I’ve heard all the arguments and read all the articles. I’ve watched 250,000 people of all ages, shapes and fitness levels do yoga in the heat. If it were bad, weird or dangerous I would have noticed.

At Fierce Grace we run the classes at a lower more comfortable heat than many hot yoga studios. The yoga is practice. The heat is just a support.

However, I do believe some hot yoga studios completely overdo it, running at temperatures of 110-130 degrees. I believe this is not healthy, is depleting and enervating and poses some risks. However hot yoga, if taught properly, in a moderately heated room, between 80 degrees to 100 degrees, with good oxygenation and humidity, by properly trained instructors is safe, heal thy and effective. Teachers must know what to look out for and encourage those who are breathing heavily through the mouth, the unfit, new, very muscular or overweight or those who look too hot, to sit down and rest. They must take it slow, drink water and go gently. Allowing people to go outside when they are acclimatising is sensible. However this is rare, most people sit down for a few minutes during their first few classes, and are then totally fine.
