When we want to take stunning wildlife images – perhaps to enter them into the wildlife categories in our Outdoor Photographer of the Year competition (see page 30) – there are many potential scenarios for how you find your subjects. Most nature photographers spend years honing their fieldcraft skills and learning about animal behaviour. Th is enables them to go into the wild habitats where their chosen subjects live and, with time and patience, they can get close enough to capture naturally wild action shots. For sure, they want to get photos that will impress potential clients, friends and peers, but there is also something intrinsically valuable about how they have gone about getting the pictures. Of course, not everyone has the luxury of personal circumstances that allows them to go into the field for days on end for the slim chance of capturing what they are looking for. And this is where the water starts to become murkier with regards to the ethics of what wildlife photography should be, and the responsibilities we bear as active participants in the natural world.
