When you think about open water swimming, do you think of a sport for the few or a sport for the many? Although Sport England figures show a drop in participation in pool swimming, swimmers are taking to the open water in increasing numbers. But the question of how to encourage more people into the open water isn’t a new connundrum. This issue we celebrate a true pioneer of the open water: Mercedes Gleitze, the first British woman to swim the English Channel, was an independent working class woman who promoted open water swimming to a new audience. Her daughter recounts her inspiring story.
