If you want to do well in the pool you need to polish up your starts, turns and finishes

Just as you need to develop specific skills for open water swimming, such as sighting and drafting, doing well in the pool requires you to become proficient at starts, turns and streamlining.

At the elite level, simply swimming fast doesn’t win medals. Your starts and turns also need to be perfect. In shorter distance races, all swimmers now swim underwater using powerful dolphin kicks for up to 15 metres (the maximum allowed) after starts and turns on butterfly, backstroke and front crawl. Swimmers like Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte excel at this part of swimming and it’s a key part of their training and practice.
