Still going STRONG

Keri-anne Payne was our open water hero in issue 1. we asked her to take a break from her busy training schedule to update us on the last five years

Firstly, congratulations on your win on 17 October 2015. We know you took a long break from full-time training aft er London. How hard was it to recover your form and fitness? And do you think you’re a stronger open water swimmer now than in 2008?

Thanks very much; it’s always great to end a season on a high with that win in Hong Kong especially with the strong field. When my coach and I sat down together in 2013 we worked out a plan for then to the 2016 season. We made a bold choice to take a year out of competitive 10k swimming. I needed time to recover mentally and physically from 17 years of swim training. I needed time away from the pool to discover what type of swimmer I had to be in order to get back in. It was a fascinating and exciting journey and took me to some great countries with interesting and “fun” races. Fun because these were races that I have never been able to do due to full time training. I swam the fastest mile in the Caribbean in the Cayman Islands to the Tiburon nautical mile in San Francisco. I would say that with a year out of 10k racing and only one season so far back in the water, I am a stronger open water swimmer than ever before. The sport has moved on so much in eight years and I have really enjoyed making changes and moving on as an athlete.

About Outdoor Swimmer

In our fifth anniversary issue we take a look back at the first five years of H2Open magazine as well as looking to the future and asking ,where will swimming take you in 2016? Whatever your level of swimming, there is a challenge out there for you! If that challenge is a winter swimming competition, we have plenty of top tips and expert advice on swimming in icy water. But if the cold doesn’t really do it for you, we have destination reports from sunny Bermuda and the German lakes. In this issue we also profile four young BLDSA swimmers as well as catching up with open water swimming champions Keri-anne Payne and Cassie Patten. Plus all the usual training, technique and nutrition advice and gear reviews. Happy swimming!
