FINA launches mass participation events

FINA, the international governing body for swimming, plans to run a series of mass participation open water swimming events alongside its elite World Cup series in 2016.

The FINA World Cup is a global series of 10km marathon swims that runs each year from roughly February to October. There were 10 races in 2015 and currently seven on the calendar for 2016.

The proposal from FINA is for each organiser of a World Cup event to host a mass participation swim in advance of the elite race to allow regular swimmers the opportunity to swim at the same location and then watch the elite race. The exact race and course configurations are still being finalised but mass participation swimmers will typically complete swims of up to 2.5km.

About Outdoor Swimmer

In our fifth anniversary issue we take a look back at the first five years of H2Open magazine as well as looking to the future and asking ,where will swimming take you in 2016? Whatever your level of swimming, there is a challenge out there for you! If that challenge is a winter swimming competition, we have plenty of top tips and expert advice on swimming in icy water. But if the cold doesn’t really do it for you, we have destination reports from sunny Bermuda and the German lakes. In this issue we also profile four young BLDSA swimmers as well as catching up with open water swimming champions Keri-anne Payne and Cassie Patten. Plus all the usual training, technique and nutrition advice and gear reviews. Happy swimming!
