Ella Foote meets Katherine May, author of uplifting serial The Whitstable High Tide Swimming Club

You have to be dedicated to swim in the sea at Whitstable. At low tide the beach doesn’t look very appealing at all: the tide goes out a long way and the sea bed is a mixture of mud, sand and oyster beds for Whitstable’s famous molluscs. However, when the tide returns, it comes in quickly and offers deep water and a sheltered bay for a swim.

Author Katherine May and I meet at the seaside town on the north Kent coast on an overcast day. To many the coastline might seem bleak, with the rain rolling in over the Isle of Sheppey, but Katherine can see the beauty of the beach whatever the weather. “I walked down to the seafront the other day, just to see the rain on the sea. You don’t truly love the beach unless you love it in all weather,” she says. “You feel like it is your private space, but it isn’t at all. I enjoy seeing it come to life in the summer, but I am always glad to get my beach back in the autumn.”
