ASA NATIONAL OPEN WATER CHAMPIONSHIPS

The ASA National Open Water Championships at Rother Valley, near Sheffield, is one of the few events on the open water calendar where you can start with a dive, as the world’s best do at the Olympics. Admi¤edly you have to dive off a rather wobbly pontoon, and you have a good chance of tumbling, inelegantly, into the water when everyone steps into their starting position and the platform dips alarmingly, but it still feels a bit special.

The downside with a dive start is that your face is one of the first things to hit the water. If it’s cold, this can be a bit of a shock. However, the 2016 running of the nationals was blessed with sunshine and warm water.

About Outdoor Swimmer

In this issue we explore wild swimming in Scandinavia, where the right to roam extends to swimming outdoors – in some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery. We also bring you reports from some our favourite events of the summer – more swims for you to add to your bucket list! We hear from Howard James and Sabrina Wiedmer about their record breaking swims – the earliest (and coldest) English Channel crossing and the first woman to cross the Dál Raita Channel, respectively. And if that all sounds a bit too hardcore and serious, Dan Abel shows us how to keep our swimming fun. Enjoy the magazine and happy swimming.
