ARCH TO ARC ATHLETE DIES ATTEMPTING TO SWIM ENGLISH CHANNEL

On 7 August, accomplished athlete, Douglas Waymark, 44, passed away following his Channel attempt as part of the Enduroman Arch to Arc Challenge. The CS&PF reported that he was pulled out of the water at around 9pm, in French waters, approximately 15 miles from Dover, and airlifted to William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, where he later died. Our thoughts are with his family.

Flicking through my Facebook feed on a weekend I am always astounded by the sheer variety of challenges swimmers around the world take on, from wild dips to awe-inspiring marathon swims. This past month Caroline Block finished just short of a two-way North Channel crossing; Chloë McCardel announced her new world record attempt – a four-way English Channel; and Sarah Thomas swam into the record books with a 104-mile swim in Lake Champlain. It often makes me feel very inadequate!
