For chocolate lovers, every month of the year is chocolate month. However, with chocolate week officially falling between 9th-15th October, October gives us another excuse to indulge in our favourite sweet stuff!
Think that chocolate is new to the scene? Think again. Chocolate dates back as far as 1900 BCE, and in its earliest days it was consumed as a drink. The Aztec Empire believed that cacao seeds came as a gift from their god of wisdom, and they were often exchanged as currency, so strong was the belief in their value.
It is not thought to have made its way to Europe until later though — with the word entering the English Language from Spanish sometime in the 16th Century. Of course, we no longer simply ferment cacao seeds and make a drink from them (although a nice hot chocolate will likely never go out of fashion!). Now chocolate is used in muffins, cakes, truffles, mousse and plenty more.
