PowerTorque  |  Issue 46 April - May 2012

IVECO is certainly not hiding its talent, and, with the Powerstar Road Train version, it enters the heavy-transport end of the market with 600 hp on tap and all the refinements of a European-style cab, plus the benefit of a conventional bonnet.

As well as the first drive by the Australian media of the DAF XF105, we interview Kennedy Express, one of the companies selected to assist DAF in evaluating the new cabover, and find fuel economy is a major plus, as well as the high levels of comfort.

Thompson Bros. Transport of Dubbo has plenty of reasons to celebrate this month as the company celebrates 50 years in business. We feature the 50th anniversary Western Star being delivered and talk with Mark Thompson about the direction of the company into new technology.

Acacia Transport is a staunch Kenworth supporter, and we join managing director, Angelo Mezzomo, for an early start at the Yennora Woolsheds in Sydney, a venue steeped in trucking history. His fleet has grown to 25 trucks since 1995, a strong indication that specialisation in fruit and vegetables brings its own rewards.

Cat Trucks remain a high interest amongst operators, and, in this issue, we visit Malec Bros Transport of Lara, in Victoria, to check on four CAT CT 630 day-cab prime movers working on container handling and logging. All reports say the new trucks are holding up well and keeping the drivers happy.

Of course there’s more. John Sampson talks about how he has developed towing expertise for vehicle recovery, with Eagle Towing, and we profile a new agitator from Japanese truck maker Isuzu.

Biofuels are going to grow in popularity, and in this issue we look at Willaton Transport of Morwell, a long-term biofuel user, and technical editor Allan Whiting looks at why its use is going to be more widespread. We also look at how it’s distributed, and how sourcing your fuel supply from Refuelling Solutions can save you time and money.
