The Grand Tour

Chatsworth House, Derby Museum and Art Gallery, Harley Gallery Welbeck, Nottingham Contemporary, 18th March to 30th June

This is the second iteration of an inspired idea to coax visitors to England’s heartland. The concept of the Grand Tour—a journey undertaken to the seed bed of western culture in search of education and astonishment—grants gracefully unites these four different institutions.

Chatsworth will highlight artworks brought back from the continent by early Devonshire grand tourists. Meanwhile, the Derby Museum and Art Gallery focuses on local artist Joseph Wright’s career-defining journey to the continent in the 1770s. The Harley, which opens a new gallery this year dedicated to masterpieces from the Portland Collection, has invited Peter Blake to exhibit collages from his “World Tour” series, alongside works by performance artist Rose English. Finally, Nottingham Contemporary offers a major show by Turner Prize winner Simon Starling, much of it pondering industrialisation. Wright’s The Alchemist Discovering Phosphorus has been lent from Derby to close the circle.

Omer Fast: Present Continuous

Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, 18th March to 26th June

Omer Fast, an Israeli-born, Berlin-based video artist, makes fast and loose with stories. His spooky films are presented as documentaries, but are artificial narative constructs. In Continuity (2012), what at first seems like the welcoming home of a young soldier by two parents, intercut with what may be memories, is twisted by repetition, confounding our trust at every turn. This show includes older works and a new, specially commissioned piece: Continuity (Diptych).
