10 years of railway services to Darwin
On Saturday 17 January 2004, watched by thousands of people, a freight-train from “down south” drove slowly across an embankment to the new Darwin Port – the completion of a long-held dream for many, particularly those in the Northern Territory. The freight-train had left Adelaide on Thursday 15 January – once again watched by thousands who wanted to witness this historic event. 2014 marks 10 years of operation of the Adelaide to Darwin railway. Phil Cross takes a look at the start-up of train services and how these have evolved over those 10 years.
Moree Inland Railway Symposium attracts strong interest
Illustrating the strong interest in the topic, 133 delegates from the Australian east coast attended the Melbourne to Brisbane Inland Railway Symposium in the north-west NSW town of Moree on 7 March. The symposium attracted representatives from local government, engineering organisations, freight customers and rural lobby groups. John Hoyle reports on what proved to be a very positive event.
