We think of paleontology as a benign science. As noted by the late-great paleontologist George Gaylord Simpson, rather than killing creatures like big-game hunters, paleontologists resurrect creatures, digging up bones from the distant past and breathing life within them. Apparently, those of us enamored by this myth may need to rethink.
Per an article by Rodrigo Pérez Ortega in the journal Science, paleontologists studying ancient life contained within amber may be contributing to violence in Myanmar. The 99-million-year-old life contained within amber-colored windows includes insects, plants, lizards and feathers of ancient dinosaurs. They have revealed an exquisite three-dimensional picture of life in the distant past.
