While perusing various sites and social media feeds viewing remarkable cabs created by artists around the world, I found myself longing to know more about the cabs and the artists.

That curiosity inspired me to launch a new blog at www.rockngem.com. The ‘Just Off the Wheel’ blog/column will showcase the artistry of cabochons, the vision of the artists who transform these natural treasures, and the inspiration behind it all.

I decided to kick things off with a profile of two cabs by the same talented lapidary artist and cut from the same source. The names of the cabs are the “Wakeful Dreamer” and the “Beautifully Strong.” They were cut from a Woodward Ranch ‘biscuit’ agate, of the legendary Woodward Plume of Woodward Ranch, in Brewster County, Texas. The cabs are the work of prolific self-taught lapidary artist Erin Dana Balzrette, owner of Tree Climbers Stones. You may recognize Ms. Balzrette’s name from previous issues of Rock & Gem. She’s written articles and her cabs and photographs have appeared in the Parting Shot page a few times. Plus, After discussing my idea for this blog/column with her, she is the one who suggested calling the blog/ column ‘Just Off the Wheel.’ Perfect!
