Ninth of September 2016, and the Lagoa was ready for action again under the stern gaze of Christ the Redeemer. The lake's whippy surface provided plenty of challenge to the Paralympic rowers, but served up a vintage regatta, culminating in the four medal finals on day three.

The longest para-rowing final began in a flurry of lactic acid, the oarswomen whizzing away from the 1000m start with China's fast newcomer Wang Lili in the lead. The most recent world champions, 2015's Moran Samuel (Israel) and 2014's Birgit Skarstein (Norway), rapidly followed, but the season's form competitor, Britain's Rachel Morris, was struggling at the back, in what she described later as "an appalling start".
