Dr Valery Kleshnev takes another look at the concept

The idea of improving rowing efficiency through minimising “boat-check” is an old but popular one amongst rowers, coaches and rowing scientists alike.

The first comprehensive scientific study of rowing efficiency can be found in the 1927 publication of F.H. Alexander. 1 The author refers to an even older article, from arguably the greatest ever mathematician, Leonhard Euler, who published his Complete Theory of the Construction and Properties of Vessels in 1773, and gave therein a supplementary chapter that dealt exclusively with the principles of rowing.
