THE SECOND COMING

THREE BIKES THAT IMPRESSED US FIRST TIME ROUND ARE BACK WITH THEIR NEW, IMPROVED VERSIONS TO WOW US FURTHER.
PICTURES BY MARK

There’s a lot to be said for making that difficult second album and the same is true with making bikes that get people excited. The first bike model can be new and exciting, going off in a new direction, launching a new model range, or looking at the bike in a whole new way. How then do you improve upon it? In some cases the bike firms are happy with a bit of gentle evolution, but other times they continue with the bold moves and brave new world approach.

Our three bikes on test have run the range of options.

There are some subtle improvements to keep up with the times and there are some big steps toward the future too.

We have a Segment that has been shortened, widened and lightened, a Santa Cruz that it so improved over its predecessor that it warrants a completely different name and we have a Singular that makes a nod to a couple of things that have happened in the last ten years, but other than that, keeps ploughing its individual path as before.

Let’s see how they all get on…

ORANGE SEGMENT RS

Price: £3700.00 (‘Mountain Mint’ colour adds £100.00)

From: Orange, orangebikes.co.uk

The Segment appeared in 2015 with a video that played on the dual meaning of its name: orange segment/Strava segment (geddit?). While it was ostensibly an evolution of the Gyro – Orange’s original 29er – its geometry, and whole intended purpose was different enough to effectively make it a brand new model.
