Standing at the start line, I gazed at the course ahead. Around me, my competitors were watching and I realised one of them was actually filming me. I gulped. In my eyes, they were all in good shape and there was no doubt I was the biggest lad there. My stomach clenched with nerves as I told myself: ‘Don’t fall off. Just don’t fall off’.

I mounted my skateboard and began weaving my way through the cones. It took all my concentration to stay balanced because my belly seemed to be throwing off my centre of gravity. Thankfully, aside from the odd wobble, I reached the end still on my board and with my dignity intact. I smiled. It hadn’t been a bad performance – deep down, though, I knew it could have been better. I’d been more focused on not falling off than creating speed and outpacing my opponents.
