Spot your slimming danger zones

Do you find that certain habits and situations always knock you off course? Here’s how to tame your triggers and power through to weight-loss success

We all have them, despite our very best intentions – those moments when we find ourselves reaching for unhealthy foods and high-Syn snacks, almost without thinking. And the funny thing is, often we realise we weren’t actually hungry in the first place. Instead, we’re eating for other reasons: boredom, upset, stress, even to make other people happy. These are our trigger points and understanding them, and then putting strategies in place, can make a world of difference to your weight loss. If any of these seven eating triggers ring a bell, don’t worry. Countless Slimming World members know exactly how you feel and, using their experience, we’ve put together a guide to transforming your unhappy habits into winning weight-loss ways.

Some people lose their appetite when they feel stressed, but for many of us the opposite is true – we eat to self-soothe, and especially sugary or fatty treats. This can then leave us feeling guilty, which in turn makes us feel more stressed, and we get into a vicious circle. ‘When you’re stressed and distracted you can also be vulnerable to eating mindlessly,’ says Dr Jacquie Lavin, Slimming World’s head of nutrition and research. ‘When you’re not concentrating on your food, you’re less likely to register feeling full and can end up veering off plan.’ And there’s another good reason to de-stress: research suggests that, over time, raised stress levels can encourage the body to store fat around the middle, raising the risk of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.
