As Ruby and Jessie went through their kick-boxing drills, it was almost like watching a dance routine. My daughters, then 11 and seven, had started practising the sport six months earlier, and I loved seeing them put so much skill and care into kicking and punching the air in controlled, martial-arts moves. But alongside my pride in my strong, beautiful girls, I felt sadness. I was the only parent sitting at the back of the hall, perched uncomfortably on a bench. All the others were joining in with their children. I knew there was no way I could keep up with my two – after all, I struggled to walk up stairs without panting for breath. In that moment, I knew I wasn’t the fit, energetic role model I wanted to be for my daughters – and that, if I didn’t find a way to turn my health around, I’d soon be looking back on their childhood full of regrets.
