Tilburg, Netherlands

What better way to start off Roadburn than with a shot of The Poisoned Glass? Stuart Dahlquist and Edgy59 themselves embody just about everything Roadburn is about – versatility, perseverance, open mind, adventurous spirit and awesome music. Despite being one of their very first live shows, the two former Burning Witch members create an enveloping, intimidating atmosphere in the Het Patronaat, clearly setting the tone for what is one of the best editions of Roadburn ever – and that’s saying something. It’s down to the reformulated Green Room next for a double-header of the future of doom metal – both Inverloch and Usnea, each in their own inimitable style, especially the former with their indisputable diSEMBOWELMENT lineage, seem fit to shoulder that responsibility judging on the two solid performances they put on. We just slip out for a bit in between the shows to peek at a bit of Der Blutharsch at the Patronaat, a surprisingly breezy, even happy affair, in the best possible sense, that makes us dance within our minds for the duration. Oranssi Pazuzu are surely one of the bands swirling around the heads of most Roadburners after this first day, their show such a hypnotic, powerful tour de force that it makes us forget how steamy and terribly packed the Patronaat got for it (a recurring problem for this particular venue in this year’s edition, in fact). Luckily we aired it out during two consecutive re-enacted classics – first ‘Jane Doe’, a little bit of a disappointment from Converge, with little audience engagement, sound too low and a general incomprehensible lack of enthusiasm overall. Things only really livened up during the monstrous closing title-track, with Stephen Brodsky already on stage doing second guitar. Paradise Lost’s ‘Gothic’ seemed to be going down the same route with an all-over-the-place title-track opener, but fortunately the band caught the slide in time and recovered to make this one a trip to the past of epic proportions, very worth remembering. A quick run to the Green Room helped us catch Behold! The Monolith laying down some of the mightiest, meatiest riffs of the whole weekend – a vastly underrated band if there ever was one – and it was up to Dead Neanderthals to jazzily rough up our last remaining beer-soaked brain cells at the little Cul de Sac.

About Terrorizer Magazine

This month’s cover stars are 25 years old this year and have just released their tenth album, so for Katatonia it’s a double whammy. But with age comes clarity and knowledge and as you’ll have heard for yourselves, the band’s new release ‘The Fall Of Hearts’ is such a brilliant piece of melancholic metal. Perhaps not the most obvious of coverstars, it’s safe to say that Katatonia deserve the honour through consistently delivering awesome albums and going the distance when others have fallen by the wayside. I know you’ll enjoy José’s story as much as I did reading it for the first time. This issue is packed, as always, with a cross-section of brutality and extremity and was brought to you as certain staff members recover from two of the best festivals in the calendar – namely Roadburn and Ritual Festival. You can read about both in this ‘ere issue too.
