Tim Woodcock-Jones View from Pitstone Hill, oil on canvas, 28¼ ×40¼ in (72×102cm)
Full-time artist and designer, Tim Woodcock-Jones has worked for various design groups, publishers and TV companies. View from Pitstone Hill (above) is one of a series of landscapes produced for exhibiting at the Affordable Art Fair in Battersea earlier in the year. ‘Pitstone Hill in the Chilterns is a recurring theme of mine,’ he explains. ‘I’ve produced many drawings and taken hundreds of photographs of the hill over the years, looking for that certain light created by the sun through the clouds as it casts light and dark across the landscape. I’m trying to convey that sense of near and far. Footpaths cut across the landscape, helping to create depth, especially where they have exposed the white chalk. This painting shows the hill towards the end of October, when the sky had a good mix of light and dark clouds and the sun is breaking through in the distance.
‘Back in the studio, I made a rough drawing of the painting in charcoal, then primed the linen canvas with white gesso before coating it with a thin layer of yellow ochre mixed with a little burnt umber. Drawing straight onto the canvas in charcoal, I loosely blocked in the dark areas. I use Artists’ oil colour, thinned with turpentine, blocking in colour fairly roughly with a combination of flat and round hog-hair brushes, gradually reducing the amount of turps as the work progresses. Fine details are added last with a sable brush. My colour palette is made up of: titanium white; buff titanium; cadmium yellow; cadmium red; cobalt blue; French ultramarine; yellow ochre; burnt umber; permanent sap green; yellow green; olive green and Payne’s grey.’
