Spring is my favourite season, partly because of the anticipation of better weather, more daylight hours, new beginnings, but also because it’s the time of year when we get to enjoy viewing the entries to our annual open competition, organised in partnership with Patchings Art Centre. As I write the notification letters are being sent out to all entrants. These will be received with excitement by selected artists and understandable disappointment by those whose works could not be accepted for exhibition. As the judges all agreed, however, the strength in depth of the entries was incredible, and not being accepted is in no way indicative of ‘failure’ or a judgement about the inferior quality of a work. Gallery space is finite, only 70 paintings can be exhibited, and many, many works that would easily have been accepted if space was unlimited, much to our collective regret, could not be accommodated.
