New ways of working

David Gould combines digital methods with traditional painting techniques in a range of media to produce his landscapes and still lifes. He reveals his methods to Caroline Saunders

MASTER CLASS

Responding directly to the changing moods of nature, David Gould paints landscape and still-life subjects in oil, watercolour and acrylic, or using digital and abstract imagery and casting in bas relief into paper, acrylic and other media. His methods are always evolving as he takes great pleasure in looking for new ways of working.

Finding inspiration

The city parks of Cardiff and the nearby valleys of South Wales provide inspiration as well as further afield in Italy, where David began painting landscapes over 35 years ago. Painting almost entirely on the spot, David works through close, prolonged observation. ‘I seek to explore the encounter between the energies of growth and light, and the constantly changing configurations of colour and surface seen in landscape. I am fascinated by the ways in which light and shadow can spread across a surface – dissolving, concealing, revealing or emphasising certain features. Direct sunlight can be quite theatrical, alighting objects and enhancing surfaces and details.’

David is influenced by the still-life paintings of Cézanne, Chardin and many European still-life painters of the 17th century. ‘Still Life with Fruit and a Carafe of White Wine by Pensionante del Saraceni in the National Gallery, Washington, is particularly compelling. Its monumentality, perfect composition, chiaroscuro and realistic representation of cut open, though untouched pieces of fruit are remarkable.’
