Give oil pastels a go!

Ben Hope has re-discovered the advantages and versatility of oil pastels. He shares his techniques and tips for working on a variety of subjects, whether in your sketchbook or a finished painting

My Sennelier oil pastels in their Jackson’s Art Box. The box is supplied with two plastic panels (not pictured), which I lay over the pastels to prevent them tumbling around when the case is carried. I also cut pieces of foam to create compartments that help hold the pastels in place

This took about an hour. I used a lot of scratching, both to give it dynamism and to adjust tones. I used a cocktail stick to create the light on the nostril, scraping through the dark tone into the pinky orange underneath
