Stormy skies in watercolour

Barry Herniman demonstrates how to imbue a dramatic watercolour landscape scene with mood and atmosphere

organises and tutors painting holidays at home and abroad. He is also available for workshops and demonstrations to art societies. Travelling up to Argyll in the west of Scotland, I was greeted with kind Scottish hospitality and terrific scenery. Because the landscape is crisscrossed with so many lochs and valleys, the weather systems tend to move through at a considerable rate of knots. Wait five minutes and you can have a complete change of weather! All this adds up to some pretty dramatic skies and it is one such sky that I want to portray in this demonstration.

I took several photographs, all of which had completely different skies. In the one used as the reference for this painting I managed to catch the scudding clouds as they clipped the top of the mountains. The clouds were quite dark and foreboding, but they had a tremendous luminosity that made them shimmer.
