The Artist 2019 Open Art Competition

Be inspired by the work of some of our talented prizewinners in this year’s annual open competition, organised in partnership with Patchings Art Centre

The Artist Purchase Prize & The Artist Exhibition Award

John Shave Autumn Sunset, oil, 27½ x43¼in (70 x110cm).

‘I studied painting in Australia with my tutor and friend Leonid Vasin. I now live in England where I teach painting courses in my studio. I mainly paint en plein air and am a member of The Wapping Group, East Anglian Group of Marine Artists and in South Australia I am a member of the Royal Society of Arts.

‘My painting started as a plein-air oil sketch. I only had a short time to paint as the light was fading so fast. Back in the studio I translated my sketch into the larger painting. I am fascinated by the effects of light on the landscape, especially at this time in the evening, when the landscape loses definition in the transient light. The painting is oil on Belgian linen and was painted over several days, attempting to convey the feelings I had at the time.’

Clairefontaine & The Artist Exhibition Awards

Carol Hill Footsteps in the Snow, oil, 25¼ x27½in (64 x70cm).

‘This was painted after going out for a walk on a cold, late winter’s afternoon across the fields. The afternoon light cast long shadows; the light was beautiful and the red post in the distance sang out against the subtle tones of the snow and the strong colours of the trees.
