Executive Toy, acrylic on HP watercolour paper, 61⁄4x103⁄4in (16x27.5cm). Not every painting has to be entirely believable. This began in my titles book as ‘Executive Soft Toy’, the idea being to kind of replicate that executive toy based on Newton’s cradle (which had just five steel balls, not six). It wouldn’t work, of course – it’s just a daft, surreal painting and it was so popular I could have sold it 20 times over!
Please Help Yourself, acrylic on HP watercolour paper, 93⁄4x131⁄2in (24.5x34.5cm). This took quite some time to paint. I wasn’t even sure I could paint the Walker and Hall silver bonbon dish because it was so complicated. It’s really satisfying when you’ve spent upwards of 150 hours on a piece and it works so well
Every exhibition I take part in needs at least a couple of strawberry paintings. Indeed, I believe if I painted a whole solo show of strawberries I would sell out. As people arrive at the gallery they head straight for the bright red of the strawberries – they stand out above all the others. Sometimes, once a strawberry painting has been sold it has to be removed from the gallery wall lest all subsequent collectors wish they could have bought it and fail to choose a painting not yet displaying a red dot.
