TYPES OF POSTGRADUATE STUDY

KEEN TO CONTINUE YOUR STUDIES? WITH SO MANY DIFFERENT QUALIFICATIONS & SPECIALISMS ON OFFER, MAKE SURE YOU TAKE TIME TO SERIOUSLY CONSIDER WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU

There is a clear distinction to be made between taught courses and research-based courses.

TAUGHT COURSES are very similar to undergraduate degrees as they require that students study a predetermined set of taught modules. The format includes seminars, lectures and tutorials with the degree often being assessed by a mixture of exams, research, a thesis and practical exercises such as presentations.

RESEARCH-BASED COURSES put a greater emphasis on private research, supervised by an academic, so you would be required to carry out a large amount of independent work towards the completion of a lengthy thesis. Generally speaking, research-based qualifications are more relevant to students seeking a career in academia.

MASTER’S DEGREES: MA, MSC, MENG ETC.

A Master’s degree generally takes a year of full-time study, or two years if carried out part-time.
