KNOW YOUR WORK RIGHTS

THE NEED-TO-KNOW INFO WHEN YOU’VE LANDED THAT JOB

CONTRACT OF EMPLOYMENT

Preferably this should be written down but it doesn’t have to be — as soon as you accept a job you have a contract with your employer. If there is a dispute though, it will be harder to prove if the contract isn’t written down.

The ‘terms’ of your contract are legally binding and set out your duties, responsibilities, rights and conditions of employment, and these must be adhered to until your contract ends.

Within two months of working, you must have a written statement of the details of your employment. This isn’t a contract but it is very important. It will outline terms and conditions as well as basics like pay and working hours.

WAGES

On 1 April 2016, the National Living Wage came into effect for people aged 25 and over. This is currently £7.50 per hour. In April 2017, the National Minimum Wage rose to £7.05 per hour for 21 to 24-yearolds, and for 18 to 20-year-olds it is £5.60 per hour.

According to the GOV.UK website, the rates change every April — so check online to see how this will affect your pay.
