LETTER OF THE MONTH

WORKSHOP OF WONDERS

GUITER LETTER OF THE MONTH

Dear Chris and the TGM team, I buy the mag religiously every month from my local newsagent, and it’s always a pleasure to read, but I wanted to single someone and something out for special mention, and that’s Huw Price and his fantastic Workshop features. Every single month, it seems that Huw is attempting the sort of high-level repair, build or restoration that 99.9999 per cent of guitar players wouldn’t even dream of – even the ones who think they’re a bit handy, like me!

But the thing that I really love, and that has me shaking my head with a mixture of admiration and disbelief, isn’t just the fastidious attention to detail that he documents in these projects, or even his passion for vintage authenticity… it’s the sheer gumption that he regularly displays to just have a go and try things that are a bit outside the box.

How many of us would even think to try a bit of at-home torrefaction using a regular oven like Huw did in the Martin kit project a few months ago? Or who would contemplate building their own attenuator, for that matter? And then there’s the one that inspired this letter – creating his own vintage-looking capacitor tubes the Fender amp restoration from last month [June 2017]. I still can’t quite believe that Huw managed to find the markings of the cardboard tubes from the 50s… then printed them onto similar card to the original and finally sprayed with nitrocellulose so they look old! It was such a perfect exemplar of everything I love about Workshop – attention to detail, an obsessive pursuit of period accuracy, and some true ingenuity mixed in there, too.
