Predictions are unwise in politics, said The Times. But in the case of the Labour Party, it’s possible to make a few confident forecasts. One is that Jeremy Corbyn this weekend will beat Owen Smith to the leadership by a
clear margin. Another is that he will tell the party, after a bruising election, that he wishes to unite all its factions behind him, so they can fight the Tories. “A third is that he will be lying.” Corbyn may have a kind, “grandfatherly demeanour”, but his ascent has been propelled by “hard-left activists”, now consolidated into the group Momentum. They have become “the cuckoo in Labour’s nest”, hollowing out a “once-great party of the centre-left and depriving the country of a functioning opposition”.
