FRANCE IN TURMOIL: HOW MACRON LOST HIS GRIP
In a dramatic U-turn, the French government this week suspended plans to introduce the fuel tax rises that have sparked protests across France. Édouard Philippe, the prime minister, said the hikes would be delayed for six months to allow time for further debate. The climbdown followed a third weekend of violent unrest in which one hundred and thirty three people were injured and more than four hundred arrested. In Paris, police fired tear gas and stun grenades as demonstrators wreaked havoc in some of the capital’s richest neighbourhoods, looting shops, torching cars, smashing windows and defacing the Arc de Triomphe. President Macron had earlier insisted that he would “never accept violence”, and claimed the protesters had been infiltrated by activists from the far-left and far-right. However, polls suggested that the gilets jaunes – named after their yellow high-visibility jackets – enjoyed more than 70% support across the country.
