Dr. Kamilla Kamaruddin graduated from the Catholic University of Leuven in 1987, returned to work as a trainee doctor for three years in her native Malaysia, and in 1991 left for the UK to pursue a career as a GP. She has been a denizen of London’s well-heeled Mayfair for over 10 years. Her apartment is a stone throw away from The Ritz and the iconic Claridge’s. On any given night of the week, you would find her dining at her favourite haunts - The Wolseley, (for “celebrity-spotting” she says) and Tamarind, for the best curry in town – often dressed to the nines in Dries Van Noten or Rick Owens.
Now that she is in a more privileged position, Dr. Kamilla wants to help others who don’t have a voice or the same opportunities as she did. She tells Warren Christopher Hallett about her experience as a transgender GP, her transition, her childhood and the challenges faced by the Malaysian trans community.
