The long-term survival of many of Africa’s wildlife species is under great threat. Adam Cruise lists the continent’s most endangered creatures and comments on their current status

In Kenya on 19 March 2018, the world’s last male northern white rhino died. Two female rhino remain under heavy armed protection at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya, but without a male to sustain the species, northern white rhino are functionally extinct. Sadly, many other African species may soon follow. Here, according to the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species, are 10 examples of Africa’s most endangered species teetering on the edge of extinction:
