STEPS TO HEAVEN
Acursory glance at a map of North Uist will highlight just how much water there is on this Outer Hebridean island. Look more closely and you may be forgiven if your mind starts to unravel, such is its scale and complexity: fresh, brackish, salt, lochs with tidal inlets in all directions and interconnecting streams. There’s a lifetime’s fishing. We were staying at the Lochmaddy Hotel, a cosy, family-run affair with John and Lorna Docherty at the helm. You roll off the Uig ferry and you’ve arrived. It stands with commanding views over the harbour and the Minch beyond and has been welcoming anglers and travellers from all over the world for more than one hundred and fifty years.
