VEGAN: Street Style

Charlotte Willis meets the vegan and environmentallyfriendly clothing brands that are changing the shape of fast fashion

The problem with off the rack

Another week, another Instagram influencer. Another gigantic, promoted “Haul” video later, and I find myself browsing websites which I know are highly popular amongst the ever-so image-conscious generation that I’m a part of. We’ve become a world that is preoccupied with the latest trend, the next big thing – only the exceedingly new and shiny will do. It feels as if we are continually looking to the future, never taking account of what we have in front of us, and perhaps most importantly, what we’ve left behind.

Fast fashion, a term used to describe a specific type of fashion that follows a similar and common pattern. Produce large volumes of cheap clothing, cutting costs and corners wherever possible. The result? An aff ordable fashion range, the styles and trends of which change almost every week as new stock is brought into store. It’s a form of addiction, fuelling a want-it-all, want-it-now society. But what doesn’t cost your hard earned cash, will ultimately cost the earth. The modern fashion industry is one of the most polluting of them all. We buy aff ordable clothes, the majority of which aren’t designed to last, from distributors and companies whose environmental compass always points towards profit, to the detriment of our planet.
