Snow Leopards have to be one of the most enigmatic animals to grace our planet, yet we still know so little about them compared to their African counterparts. Part of this is due to their habitats; scaling rugged, vertical rock faces high in the Himalayas isn’t easy, especially with a hefty camera and recording equipment. It’s not surprising that snow leopards are rarely caught on film and, as such, wildlife enthusiasts have an understandable fascination with these mysterious cats.
It was announced earlier this year that the IUCN have removed snow leopards from their list of Endangered species, but are they still in danger? We spoke to Peter Zahler, Senior Advisor for Asia and Snow Leopard Program Coordinator for the Wildlife Conservation Society about what this really means for snow leopards.
