As a vegan, I have always had a soft spot for elephants, so I decided to escape from the dreary cold of England this winter and spend some time with them in the warmth of Thailand. I spent one week volunteering at the Elephant Nature Park, located in the Mae Taeng District, about an hour north of Chiang Mai.
Set up by Lek Chailert, a wonderful lady who has devoted her life to saving elephants, the park is dedicated to providing a sanctuary for former captive working elephants, as well as hundreds of other rescued animals. Waking up each morning to the bellowing roars of these incredible giants, as well as working near them and for their wellbeing, was truly one of the best experiences of my life. In between cutting corn, shovelling elephant poo, preparing their food and filling up on the delicious veggie buffet served three times a day, I was able to watch them interact with each other, and play in the mud as well as hear them giggle (such a beautiful sound).
