Overpopulation
Overpopulation is the state whereby the human population exceeds the carrying capacity of an ecological setting, or in other words, when the environment cannot cope with the demand of human resources — and we’re heading for this at an alarming rate. It’s almost impossible to say whether we have reached overpopulation as there are various different estimates on the Earth’s limit — ranging from 4-16 billion people. The number of us living on Earth is increasing, which is damaging our environment, draining our natural resources and heightening issues such as malnutrition, starvation and poverty. For the population of the planet to stabilise, the amount of births must equal the amount of deaths each day, yet it has been estimated that there are approximately 105 deaths each minute, compared to 250 births. These numbers are certainly sobering, but other than urging people to have fewer children, is there a way we can recalibrate this statistic?
