At the end of September, a new project was launched to arm young people with more than 15 million wildflower seeds to encourage an interest in environmental issues, and to help to revive bee populations. Over 330,000 seedballs were handed to families across the UK at various branches of Iceland (iceland.co.uk) and The Food Warehouse (thefoodwarehouse. com), as part of the Backyard Nature (backyardnature.org) campaign. The scheme was founded by young activists, the Eco Emeralds based in Liverpool, who wanted to help to halt the decline of bees in the UK. They launched the campaign via Semble (semble.org), a platform for community projects. Mark Shearer, co-founder of Semble said: “At its core, Backyard Nature is about inspiring young environmentalists to get their hands dirty and start to engage directly with accessible nature activities. Having thousands of ‘Backyard Nature Guardians’ come together to plant 15 million wildflower seeds will create a real environmental impact across the UK.”
The campaign is also being supported by groups including the Bumblebee Conservation Trust (bumblebeeconservation.org), The Wildlife Trusts (wildlifetrusts.org), The National Trust (nationaltrust.org.uk) and WWF (wwf.org.uk) as well as family activity app, Hoop (hoop.co.uk).
