The use of animal skins, exploited workers and the creation of planetharming waste — these are a few of the many negative issues associated with the fashion industry. But amidst it all, innovative companies are emerging, trying to make a difference, and to, ultimately, set new ethical precedents for future fashion brands to follow. We talk to Rina Einy from Culthread, the newly established vegan brand trying to revolutionise fashion with her beautiful line of coats.
The move to founding Culthread was gradual. Like many people, I’ve always had a lot of coats, but my lifestyle and ethics changed to a point where there wasn’t a single one I wanted to wear. Some of them had fur and down on them, which I had come to oppose. And, when I did find a coat that wasn’t made with down, leather or fur, then it annoyingly didn’t have pockets or a hood. After that, the only vegan coats with hoods and pockets I came across were the cheaper products of fast fashion, which I didn’t want to buy into either. So, in the end, I’d walk around all the time without a jacket on — people kept asking me why I didn’t wear a coat, and I’d say that I no longer had one that aligned with my morals. I figured there was only one way around it — to make my own.
