Religions, spiritual practices, philosophies and ideologies may offer many confusing, conflicting rules on how we should be living our lives. But there is one simple, straightforward concept that most have in common — the principle of treating others only as we would have them treat us.
As vegans, we are embracing this rule by choosing not to cause suffering to animals. Maybe we are even taking this principle deeper by making lifestyle choices that minimise the harm we inflict on the Earth itself. In yoga, we know this as Ahimsa — the principle of non-harming. As the first of five yoga recommendations, or yamas, Ahimsa encourages us to live with compassion and respect for the world around us. It helps wake us up to the awareness that we are part of this incredible living planet, not separate from it or superior to it.
