NEW HOMOLOGATIONS FOR KZ AND OK ENGINES FOR THREE-YEAR TERM, 2019-2021
by P.Mancini
New engine homologations are always a moment of great curiosity for everyone involved in karting. After months of top secrecy, the manufacturers unveil the weapons with which they will compete in the next three years, with the introduction of changes and innovations made in the course of development. If the KZ is now a consolidated category, the OK single-gear has finished the run-in phase of its first homologation and all the manufacturers are now sure of the road embarked upon. Obviously the limits imposed by regulations prevent designers from indulging in extreme technical solutions, but also due to the risk of failure, motorsport-wise, which immediately translates into a commercial lop, is absolutely to be avoided in an economic moment that is not at its happiest, to say the least. It is however true that a 2-stroke single- cylinder engine now follows the canons from which it is difficult to move away, such as bore and stroke measurements, rod center distance, number of ports, etc… Despite these now set parameters it is always interesting to find out how the engines are evolving and what roads the builders have undertaken. Analyzing the images, the data sheets and talking with the technicians involved in development, we have been able to see that the road that all manufacturers are following is to reduce size and weight: two very important parameters in the setup of a winning kart. Another factor taken into the highest consideration is the standardization of performance thanks to an ever-increasing use of numerical control machines for the finishing of the most sensitive elements in terms of performance (pump casing, cylinder barrel) in order to guarantee production that is increasingly more standardized and without substantial differences between one engine and the next, as was the case in the past, especially in the single-gear with cast-iron shaft. Let’s now review the various engines, one manufacturer at a time.
