Walk  |  Summer 2018

Solvitur ambulando – ‘It is solved by walking’. That’s what Diogenes the Cynic, a Greek philosopher from the 4th century BC, is said to have replied when he was asked whether motion was simply an illusion. To reinforce the point, he then got up and walked off. I rather like that.

In a more literal sense, though, many things are solved by walking. It is proven to have numerous benefits for physical and mental health. To put it another way, it’s good for the mind, body and soul. I expect that’s why so many of the world’s greatest writers and thinkers were fond of a stroll. Composers, too – Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and Mahler were all keen walkers. Elgar loved to roam his native Worcestershire, while Benjamin Britten took regular afternoon walks. Ralph Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, George Butterworth’s The Banks of Green Willow and Gustav Holst’s Egdon Heath were all inspired by Britain’s skies, rivers and countryside. If you fancy some sonic stimulation of your own, take a look at our 10 great sound walks on p26.

I’m about to walk away myself, as I am shortly leaving the Ramblers for new adventures. Thanks to all you readers who have written in over the past few years to share your stories and photos. Thanks, too, to our volunteers for all you do, and to everyone who supports the Ramblers. Well, goodbye – perhaps we’ll bump into each other on a distant summit or meet on a well-trodden footpath. I hope so!
